Every two years, the institute participates in the "open house" event at the Garching campus. The next Open House will take place on 3 October 2026.

For many years, the institutes takes part in the annual "Girls' Day", where girls have the possibility to learn more about a possible career in science and technology.

Groups, such as school classes or student groups, can visit the institute on request. As a special attraction, the institute offers custom-designed show in our digital planetarium presented live by our scientists. In addition, groups can also attend a lecture on a general astrophysics topic. For more information, please contact the public outreach office.
The Café & Kosmos series of events is organised jointly by ESO, the Excellence Cluster Universe and the Max-Planck Institutes for Physics, Astrophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics. The discussions usually take place on the second Tuesday of each month at the Muffatwerk in Munich. After a brief introduction the scientists take questions from the audience and discuss current issues from the cosmos.
