Multiphase Gas (MPRG)

Multiphase Gas (MPRG)

Gas in and around galaxies (for instance in the insterstellar, circumgalactic or intracluster medium) is multiphase, that is, a colder gas phase is embedded within a much larger, hotter gas phase. Modeling such systems is notoriously difficult and leads to often unconverged properties in larger scale (cosmological) simulations. In the `Multiphase Gas Group’ at MPA we study such multiphase systems using (magneto-)hydrodynamic simulations and analytic theory. A particular focus is also the observable signatures of this gas, where we perform radiative transfer simulations to connect the models to observations.
