MPA Mentorship Programme

Connecting aspiring astronomers with researchers at Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics

About the Program

The MPA Mentorship Program is a new initiative aimed at increasing diversity and inclusion in theoretical and computational astrophysics. We connect aspiring astronomers from underrepresented groups with current researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA).

Our Mission

We strive to create a more accessible and welcoming path into theoretical and computational astrophysics by providing direct connections between interested candidates and current researchers at MPA. Our program specifically aims to address the underrepresentation of certain groups in our field, particularly in Germany.

Who Can Apply?

We welcome interested candidates at various educational levels:

  • High school students interested in astronomy
  • Undergraduate students considering a career in astrophysics
  • Master's students looking to explore research opportunities

Note: This program is not intended for internships or for those seeking a bachelor’s or master’s thesis. For internship opportunities, please refer to this page.

What We Offer

Through our program, you'll have the opportunity to:

  • Connect with current MPA researchers who can provide guidance and support

  • Learn about careers in astronomy and life at a research institute

  • Gain insights into the field of theoretical and computational astrophysics

  • Engage in informal conversations about your academic and career goals

Our Mentors

Our mentors include postdoctoral researchers, senior PhD researchers, and staff scientists at MPA who are passionate about supporting the next generation of astronomers. They bring diverse experiences and expertise in various areas of theoretical, computational, as well as observational astrophysics.

How to Apply

To apply for the mentorship program, please send an email to mentorship@mpa-garching.mpg.de including:

  1. Background Information: Tell us about yourself, including your current career stage and educational background. You can also indicate whether you would prefer a German-speaking mentor.

  2. Motivation: Explain why you're interested in participating in the mentorship program and what you hope to gain from it.

  3. Research Interests: Describe which fields or areas of astrophysics interest you the most.

Please note: While we will do our best to match applicants with suitable mentors, due to potential high demand and mentor availability, we cannot guarantee mentorship matches for all applicants.
