"Novel Nuclear Technologies for a Greenhouse Gas-Free Energy Supply"
The continuation of climate change demands a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, which are closely linked to energy production. Many countries have responded to this challenge by investing in renewable energy production, such as solar, wind and hydropower, primarily for electricity generation. However, the high volatility of these electricity generators puts serious strain on 'backup' systems that should emit few greenhouse gases but also determine the electricity prices. While many countries have limited the deployment of renewables and are planning to use nuclear technology for base supply, Germany has taken a different approach. This has resulted in heavy reliance on burning fossil fuels and importing electricity. I will outline the current situation and the challenges it poses and highlight misconceptions in the political solutions proposed. I will discuss various nuclear technologies, which are widely regarded as a key and point to associated challenges and timescales.
