IR2026 is an ESO conference on thermal infrared astronomy, examining the legacy of current facilities such as VISIR, MATISSE, ERIS, and JWST/MIRI, and preparing the community for upcoming instruments including ELT/METIS, VLTI/NOTT, TAO/MIMIZUKU, and future space missions. Registration is open.
Thermal infrared astronomy is entering a pivotal
decade, driven by cutting-edge instrumentation and a growing range of
science applications. At ESO, facilities such as MATISSE, VISIR, and the
newly operational ERIS provide high spatial and spectral resolution for
detailed studies of protoplanetary disks, exoplanet atmospheres,
evolved stars, and obscured galactic nuclei. JWST/MIRI is delivering
transformative science from space. Looking ahead, TAO/MIMIZUKU,
VLTI/NOTT, and ELT/METIS will push to new sensitivities, and potential
space missions such as LIFE and PRIMA promise to continue expanding our
view of the obscured universe.
