The Origins Data Science Lab (ODSL) is pleased to invite you to the Statistics Block Course 2025, taking place from 22 September to 2 October 2025 at the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Garching.
This two-week programme is designed for PhD students in physics who apply statistical methods in their research. Interested MSc students from LMU and TUM are also very welcome.
The course will be split into two thematic blocks:
-
Block 1: Probabilistic Reasoning (Nicole Hartman, TUM) – An introduction to the fundamental concepts of Bayesian statistics, covering probability theory, parameter estimation, model comparison, and practical applications.
-
Block 2: Statistical Inference (Jonas Würzinger, ODSL/MPP/TUM) – An introduction to the key methods of Frequentist statistics, including hypothesis testing, confidence intervals, and advanced inference techniques.
Each block will consist of six lectures, supported by tutorial sessions and homework assignments to practise the methods discussed in class. The course will also highlight the similarities and differences between Bayesian and Frequentist approaches, as well as situations in which each method is most effective.
ECTS credits may be available for participants who register and complete the course.
