Travel and local information
Public
transportation in Munich uses an "honour-system" whereby previously
purchased tickets are canceled prior to beginning the journey. Tickets
can be purchased from blue machines marked with a green K, or from the
drivers of buses. Tickets are validated by inserting them into the blue
Entwerter (E) boxes in stations, buses and trams. This must be done before
descending to the platform on U- and S-Bahn trains. A single trip is
valid for three hours in one direction.

STREIFENKARTE: A convenient
and ~10% cheaper way is to buy a Streifenkarte (10 strips, 9 EUR)
instead of a single trip ticket and cancel the appropriate number
of strips depending on the route.

valid for all public transport in Munich for the whole day and cost:

The Munich International Airport
is 28.5 km northeast of Munich city center, and Garching is about halfway
in between. The possibilities are:

TAXI directly from the airport (20-30
min, 30-40 EUR
-
S-BAHN + TAXI
Take a train (S-Bahn, line S8)
from the airport to Ismaning and from there either a taxi (10-15 EUR) or the Bus #230 to Garching (runs every 40 minutes until 18:52 on weekdays,
NO
BUSES ON SATURDAY/SUNDAY). In either case
cancel 6 strips on the Streifenkarte before you descend to the S-Bahn platform
in the airport. There is a taxi call-box at the Ismaning S-Bahn station
if no taxis are waiting.

With THE AIRPORT-CITY BUS VIA MUNICH.
Take the Airport-City shuttle bus (9 EUR one-way, leaves every 20
min) from the airport to the stop at Munich-Schwabing (journey time ~25
min). Change to the subway (U-Bahn), line U6 to Garching-Hochbrück. Follow
the instructions below. The total journey time is ~<1.5 hours. Cancel
4 strips on the Streifenkarte before you descend to the U-Bahn platform.

With PUBLIC TRANSPORT VIA MUNICH.
Take the train (S-Bahn, line S8
or S1) from the airport to Marienplatz and then change to the subway (U-Bahn),
line U6 to Garching-Hochbrück. The ETAP hotel is in front of the U-Bahn
station. For Coro hotel take Bus #290, 291 or 293 to Keltenweg. For all
other hotels take Bus #291 (EXCEPT SUNDAY) to Maibaum or 290 or 293 to
Meier-Leibnitz-Strasse (then walk up to the hotels around Maibaum). Consult

addresses. The total journey time is ~1.5-2 hours. Cancel 8 strips
on the Streifenkarte.
The Munich Hauptbahnhof (main railway
station) is in the city center, about 2 km from Marienplatz.

With PUBLIC TRANSPORT:
Take the train (any S-Bahn line)
to Marienplatz and then change to the
subway (U-Bahn), line U6 to Garching-Hochbrück.
Follow the instruction
for getting to Garching from the
airport given above. Cancel 4 strips on the Streifenkarte before you descend
to the S-Bahn platform at Hauptbahnhof.
Take the Bus #291 (NO BUSES ON SUNDAY) from U-Bahn stop Garching-Hochbrück
(ETAP hotel) or from KELTENWEG (Coro hotel) or from MAIBAUM (other hotels)
to the bus stop Boltzmannstrassen (MPA, ESO) or Max-Planck-Institut (MPE,
IPP). Consult the

Credit cards are NOT universally accepted. There are many ATMs which allow
cash-withdrawal from foreign accounts.
The weather in and
around Munich can be quite unpredictable due to its proximity to the Bavarian
Alps. Sudden temperature swings are not uncommon so don't get caught out.
In recent weeks, the temperature has been as low as 15C and as high as
35C. Naturally, thunderstorms are fairly typical and an umbrella is a good
