Talk Title: Statistical modelling and analysis of integrated spectra
Abstract: I will start by discussing techniques for analysing integrated spectra in a statistically rigorous way. This will include a discussion of error sources and uncertainties inherent in both modelling and observations. I will in particular focus on the analysis of emission line spectra.
I will then apply these methods to a large sample of galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). This will provide a comprehensive inventory of star formation in the local universe. I will discuss the dependence of the SFR upon the physical characteristics of the galaxies
