Talk Title: Population membership of white dwarfs from the SPY project
Abstract: We present kinematics of a large sample of white dwarfs from the long term ESO SPY-project and discuss kinematic criteria for a distinction of thin disk, thick disk and halo populations. Radial velocities with unprecedented precision obtained from high resolution UVES VLT spectra combined with our measurements of proper motions and spectroscopic distances are used as an input for a numerical code to calculate orbits and galactic parameters to decide on population membership. We find 4% halo and 12% thick disk white dwarfs.
