Info on Workshop and Venue

The workshop

This workshop is an initiative of scientists from the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics, the Max-Planck-Institute for Radioastronomy, and the Auger Collaboration, after realizing in discussion that the mutual exchange of knowledge between the communities doing research on cosmic magnetic fields and on ultra-high energy cosmic rays, although extremely relevant, is quite sparse. The workshop is thought as a spin-off for the dialog between these communities. For this reason, we focus not so much on presenting both fields in depth - a hopeless endeavor for a workshop of this size - and allow only for relatively few talks, presenting the most relevant aspects of the subjects. Instead, to match the initial idea of the workshop, a significant fraction of time is devoted to discussions.

From the beginning, we planned only a small workshop, with maximally 50-60 participants. After choosing Ringberg Castle as the venue, this became a strict limit, because the Castle cannot host more people. Given the large number of people working in both fields, and considering that this is the first workshop on an issue which many people realize to be relevant now, we decided not to make a public announcement, but to select the participants by invitation only. This way, we hoped to get the leading experts of both fields together, and in spite of some unfortunate cancellations of invited participants, the SOC is proud to see that we largely reached this goal! Nevertheless, we have been able to allow for many young students, who just start to work in this field, to participate as well.

A last, but important remark: The limitation of the number of participants, and the strong time limit of just 2 1/2 days, made it necessary to make a selection that was in the end particularly one-sided for the area of ultra-high energy cosmic rays. Almost all participants representing this area are members of the Auger Collaboration - which is understandable as this meeting was born out of discussion with Auger members, but may be regarded unfair by representatives of other UHECR experiments. The SOC would like to emphasize at this point that we are aware of the great and important results of HiRes, the Telescope Array, AGASA and other UHECR observatories, and apologize that we couldn't include a detailed presentation of these results. To balance our Auger focus at least a little bit, we decided to invite two talks on other, future projects and new technologies to observe UHECR. Here, we intentionally left out Auger North, which is of course as important for the future of UHECR research. The SOC apologizes for this "political incorrectness", and excuse ourself with the fact that the political implications of this small, non-public workshop will most likely be quite limited.

Talks and Posters

Presentations given at the workshop have been selected by the SOC corresponding to the main topics of the meeting, partly by invitation, partly from contributions suggested by participants. As this meeting is by invitation only, we do not distinguish here between invited talks and contributed talks - so, all speakers may regard their talks as invited. All speakers are asked to keep to the times given in the program. Please consider that the long times scheduled for discussion in some sessions are really meant for discussion, and do not allow the speakers to overrun their time!

Ringberg Castle offers plenty of space to present posters, so we encourage everybody who does not have a talk to present his/her work on a poster. Additionally, please prepare one or two slides summarizing your poster. In sessions with long discussion sections, we may ask the one or other interesting work presented on posters to be briefly (3-5 mins) presented to the plenum. We cannot guarantee anybody to be given this chance, but it would be good if you are prepared, we think the work to prepare two slides is not too much to ask for.

The Venue

Ringberg Castle is the official conference site of the Max-Planck-Society, and located the the picturesque hills in front of the Alps, near Tegernsee. Being located somewhat remote on a hill, Ringberg Castle offers the intense atmosphere we need for a workshop like this: Most participants live in the castle, all meals are taken there, and in the evening the discussions continue over wine and beer in the Witches' Room. More information about the Castle, it's history and the surroundings can be found on the Castle's web page. We ask everybody to read in particular the page about the Castle as a conference site, which contains important information about the infrastructure available at the workshop and all details on meals.

Unfortunately, the Castle can accommodate only 40 people, so some participants have to stay in the Guesthouse Leykauf, located in Rottach-Egern. Transport between the Guesthouse and the Castle is provided free of charge by the SOC, but we may note that in particular in the morning (and good weather provided) it is nice to walk up the hill, which takes an average hiker about 30 minutes.

The room allocation for the Castle is found here, if you don't find your name on this list you stay at Guesthouse Leykauf.

Prices and Payment

Total costs at the Castle (for people accommodated there) are 285 Euro, including all meals and a fee for using the infrastructure. Note that all prices, also for the stay, are strictly per person, there is no discount for sharing a room. For members of the Max-Planck-Society, 60% of the costs at the Castle are covered by the Schlössmann Stiftung - please indicate upon your arrival your affiliation with the MPG!

The costs at Guesthouse Leykauf are 37 Euro per night (single), including breakfast. Other meals are taken (and charged) in the Castle. MPG members may note that the costs at Guesthouse Leykauf are not supported by the Schlössmann Stiftung.

Additional costs may arise for purchase of drinks, as only one drink per meal is included in the fixed costs. The SOC emphasises again that there is no financial support for this workshop, everybody has to pay his/her own bill. The Castle accepts the usual credit cards (VISA, Eurocard, Mastercard, American Express). For the Guesthouse Leykauf, please have cash ready (Euros!), as they don't accept any cards (but there are certainly ATMs in Rottach Egern).
