Snow warning! There is snow in Ringberg, and according to the weather forecast, there is a high chance of further snowfall continuing over the whole workshop. The street up the hill to the Castle is notorious, in particular in snowy weather! Participants arriving by (rental) car should make sure that the car is winter-safe and correctly equipped (snow chains)! Our bus will NOT make it up there, so we will change to smaller cars at the bottom of the hill. To reduce the amount of commuting drives, we ask everybody who can, to be prapared to walk! That means, if possible for you, bring shoes good to walk in snow, and warm clothes! The luggage will be taken by car in any case!
The Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics provides a bus with 50 seats to get from the MPA to the Castle. For most people arriving by air, this is the easiest option to get there, and we strongly recommend to use it. Using the bus is free!
The only thing you need to do is to get to MPA - a taxi from the airport will get you there in about 20 minutes and costs about 40 Euro. A cheaper option is to use public transport, please check the MPA travel directions for more information. The cheapest ticket to take from the Airport is a day-ticket for the outer regions of Munich (Single Tageskarte Aussenraum) for 5 Euro. If you are a group up to five, you can buy the group version (Partner Tageskarte Aussenraum) for just 9 Euro.
People familiar to use public transport can also find routes and prices themselves on the
Web-pages of the MVV: The station you need to go is "Garching Forschungszentrum".
The bus will leave at 12, noon, sharp! It will stop at Guesthouse Leykauf to let people check in there. If you have a
problem to get to MPA by this time, send an email to the local organizer. Note the phone number of MPA to inform us in case of delays - its easy, just Munich + velocity of light, that is: +49-89-300000. Because of the snow-problem, we can wait a few minutes at most! So if you don't make it, please be prepared to take the train and note the necessary information (see below).
For the taxi, better print a map of the location of MPA (e.g. maps.google.com) and show it to the driver, as not all drivers know our tiny street!
There is a local train connecting Munich central station to Tegernsee, called BOB. Taking this connection train is a good option for people arriving by train in Munich. Note that the time-tables on the Ringberg Web Page are not up to date, better check with the
information system of Deutsche Bahn (click on further options to get a better form!).
If you arrive at the airport and are too late for the bus from MPA, take S8 to station Donnersbergerbrücke and change there to the BOB (same platform, other track). Ask the information counter at the airport whether it is possible to buy the ticket directly, otherwise you need an S-Bahn ticket, and then buy another BOB ticket upstairs at Donnersbergerbrücke. Note that the BOB goes only once an hour, the S8 needs about 45 minutes to Donnersbergerbrücke.
From the BOB station in Tegernsee, your best option is to take a taxi to the Castle. If you arrive in time (i.e.: 13:45), you should have a bunch or workshop participants in your train and it should be possible to share.
