Accretion physics for stellar mass and supermassive
objects: Patricia Arevalo is studying the variability of accreting black holes, both stellar-mass and super-massive, from an observational perspective. The observed flux variability tracks the behaviour of the accretion flow in these objects, so it is important to characterize its properties and contrast them with our understanding of the accretion process. Furthermore, multi-wavelength monitoring work uncovers the correlations between variability in X-ray, optical and IR bands, probing the connection between the distinct structures that compose and surround the engine of Active Galactic Nuclei. Jian Hu is working with Rashid Sunyaev in the accretion model considering more accurate opacity and equation of state. He is also studying the relations between super-massive black holes and their host bulges. Akos Bogdan works on various phenomena of high energy astrophysics. His research interest mainly focuses on the hot X-ray emitting gas from nearby galaxies and on the nature of progenitors of type Ia supernovae. Henk Spruit is studying neutron stars and black holes: Theory of accreting X-ray sources: what does the accretion flow look like, and what produces the observed X-ray spectrum and the variability of the X-rays? (See picture above for a graphical illustration of some of the current ideas.) Roman Krivonos is studying the hard X-ray and Gamma-ray background emission of the Galaxy: the observational properties and origin. He is involved in the analysis of data from the INTEGRAL high-energy observatory and is responsible for the ongoing all-sky survey. On the basis of the survey, Roman studies X-ray and Gamma-ray emission from accreting compact objects in Galaxy and beyond. Sergey Tsygankov is working on the physics of matter accretion onto highly magnetized neutron stars in binary systems - X-Ray Pulsars. Particularly, he studying the response of accretion regions structure (hot spots, accretion columns) on the variability of the binary system and neutron star parameters. Also he is deeply involved into analysis of X- and Gamma-Ray data from INTEGRAL observatory. Using these data Sergey investigates spatial distribution and physical conditions in the Gamma-Ray line emitting media in the Galaxy.
